Safe spaces to practice hygiene are essential for modern communities to thrive.

In 2010, the United Nations recognized the human right to to safe, sufficient, acceptable, physically accessible, and affordable water and sanitation services. Currently, this access is not equitably distributed. Without it, human health, dignity, and prosperity suffer.

 

Our communities need a safe space for hygiene more than ever. The United States population that is experiencing homelessness (or is purposely mobile) is rising at a rapid rate. People of all ages, physical sizes and abilities, and medical conditions are on the move more than ever. Hygiene centers, such as public bathhouses, have been in use for centuries and are popular in some parts of the world. So why not everywhere? We can all benefit from a safe place to practice hygiene in dignity and peace.

Safe hygiene means more than just access to toilets. Community center services may include some or all of the following amenities:

 

    • Toilets
    • Sinks or handwashing stations
    • Showers
    • Laundry facilities
    • Trash drop off
    • Toiletries, including soap and menstruation products
    • Lactation rooms
    • Storage facilities
    • Medical supplies, staff, and treatment areas
    • Resting/sleeping areas
    • Gardens
    • Book exchange
    • Community gathering spaces
    • Warming areas
